No, the variables used in the function expression can be anything you
want and are set in "Variable names". You can call them a and b for

What is your argument for not using left/right/top/bottom/front/back?
I agree that it annoying, that the current definitions do not allow
you to switch between 2d and 3d with a single line change. There is
certainly something we can try to improve.
